However, not all gravel retention grid systems are created equal. Here is a quick guide to the essential qualities and features to look for when specifying a gravel grid system, all of which Gravelrings possess:
- A simple clipping mechanism
Look for a gravel grid system with a secure but straightforward clipping mechanism. Each 500mm square Gravelrings gravel grid has a simple but firm clip-fastening mechanism, allowing you to quickly clip the grids together and lay them according to the shape of the landscape you are working on. No specialist skills or expertise are required meaning existing staff can easily and quickly work with the Gravelrings system.
Pre-assembled in 1m² sheets, Gravelrings grids can also interlock with Grassrings grass protection system, where gravel areas are adjacent to grass.
- Compatible fixing pins
Pairing your chosen driveway grid with compatible fixing pins will keep the gravel retention system firmly in place. Gravelrings fixing pins should always be used with Gravelrings gravel grids. The number of pins required will depend on the application and site conditions but as a guide allow one pin per square metre.
- Integral mesh backing
An integral mesh backing enables the flow through of silts and other fines but prevents loose aggregate working its way under the panel and ultimately undermining the surface finish. With their exclusive gravel grid design, Gravelrings’ integral gravel mesh base prevents gravel migration and silt build-up, as well as resisting weed growth.
- Permeability
Serious flooding lead to a change in the rules about laying driveways in 2008, after it was identified that non-porous driveways were increasing the volume of rainwater flowing into storm drains and overwhelming the system. Gravelrings is a fully permeable gravel retention system for use in SuDS compliant schemes, allowing water to soak through the surface and into the ground.
- Environmental credentials
Although single-use plastic is deservedly a target for environmental campaigners, gravel grid systems will not compromise the natural environment. Made from 100% recycled plastic, Gravelrings are designed to adhere to low carbon principles and contribute to sustainability, providing more room for natural systems and less room for harmful carbon-intensive materials such as concrete. Gravelrings also reduce reflective heat and waterway contamination.
- Flexibility and strength
Your chosen gravel grid retention system needs to be up to the rigours of both its installation and its lifetime. The gravel grids need to have the flexibility to follow the contours of the landscape on which you are laying the gravel driveway and be able to withstand both the vehicular and pedestrian traffic that it will endure. The circular design of Gravelrings grids provides the strongest gravel driveway grid design on the market achieving a weight loading in excess of 350 tonnes per m² when filled.
- A low profile
The depth of the cells on some gravel driveway grid system make them prone to becoming visible over time and in heavily trafficked areas – a common pitfall of gravel retention systems. Gravelrings, however, have been designed to provide hidden but effective gravel driveway support. With a lower, 25mm cell depth, Gravelrings gravel grids for driveways are designed to be overfilled. This prevents the panels becoming visible, with the added benefit of requiring less excavation and less gravel. Gravelrings are also available in black or white to best blend in with your chosen gravel.
